Herbstreit has been in love with the sport since his early years. He was an active basketball and baseball player as well. Although he liked every game his inclination towards football brought him acclaim. Herbstreit’s Father, Jim Herbstreit, served as a co-captain. Later he coached Ohio State. Herbstreit’s inclination towards the sport seemed to have derived from his father. Later, in 1992 when he held the position of co-captain, he and his father became the only father-son duo to maintain the same place.
He attended Centerville High School in Ohio. He was the quarterback for Elks and a senior Ohio Gatorade player. He subsequently won letters as quarterback for four years at Ohio State University. He served as a co-captain along Steve Tovar and was raised as team MVP.
